Newcastle facing selection and injury crisis ahead of Premier League visit of Arsenal
Newcastle United interim manager John Carver says “We are down to the bare bones” ahead of hosting Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
Siem de Jong, Cheick Tiote, Massadio Haidara, Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett will all miss the match through injury.
Captain Fabricio Coloccini is banned for three matches after his red card at Everton last Sunday.
While Papiss Cisse must serve another six games for spitting on Jonny Evans during Newcastle’s last home game against Manchester United.
Carver is likely to switch right back Daryl Janmaat into central defence to replace Coloccini, with Ryan Taylor, Jack Colback, Vurnon Anita and Jonas all options at full-back.
On his selection headache Carver said: “There’s not much skin left on the bone to be honest.
“But just when you think you are getting somewhere with Jack Coback and Remy Cabella coming back, you lose your captain for three games.
“We’ve lost him for a derby. And he’s not played in many derby games lately.”
Carver added: “It’s down to me to work with the players we’ve got.
“Nobody else can help, other than my staff who are great.
“We will work on it and have to look at different options now.
“We are down to the bare bones.
“I will work with what I’ve got because that’s my job, and that’s what I get paid for.”
