Jordan Nobbs struck two first-half goals to set Arsenal Ladies on their way to a 3-0 win over Notts County in the Continental Tyres Cup Final this afternoon.

It was the Gunners fourth Continental Tyres Cup triumph in five years.

It made up for the disappointment of losing last year’s final to Manchester City.

The win also ensured that Arsenal Ladies continued their remarkable record of winning at least a trophy every season since 2003.

The pressure was on the Gunners to maintain that record after only managing to finish third in the FA Women’s Super League behind Champions Chelsea.

The Blues also ended Arsenal’s effort to retain the FA Women’s FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Nobbs opened the scoring midway through the first half. She was played through by Dominique Janssen’s and beat Notts County keeper Carly Telford from a tight angle.

The match swung further in Gunners favour when the Lady Pies Laura Bassett was sent off in the 34th minute.

Referee Jane Simms decided that Bassett’s tackle on Vicky Losada was reckless.

It was harsh on Bassett and Notts County, but Arsenal took full advantage to double their lead on 41 minutes.

Nobbs’ was again the scorer with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that dipped over Telford’s head into the net.

Notts County battled hard to get back into the match, but the numerical disadvantage was too big a handicap to overcome..

Rachel Williams headed against the bar in first-half stoppage time and Desiree Scott volleyed just over the crossbar on 80 minutes.

Substitute Chioma Ubogagu sealed the victory for Arsenal Ladies in stoppage time with a superb solo goal, cutting inside from the left-wing before shooting low past Telford.

Speaking after the match Nobbs said it was vital for Arsenal Ladies to end the season with a trophy.

“It’s been a tough time for us,” Nobbs admitted. “It was disappointing to finish third in the league, so to win that trophy was crucial to us.

“We need to make sure we’re not coming third in the league again next year. We don’t feel like we’ve let anybody down, but we really needed to come home with that trophy to show to everyone that we’re still fighting for every single thing.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve done as a team in this tournament and I was very determined to get a goal – luckily two of them have come off.

“The three goals we scored show how determined we were to win the trophy.”
