Arsene Wenger was asked at his press conference this morning how close Arsenal are to making more signings before the transfer window closes next week.

Media reports indicate that Arsenal are to close to sealing a £50million double deal for Deportivo La Coruna striker Lucas Perez and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

BBC Football reporter David Ornstein reported earlier this morning that “Arsenal have agreed a £35m deal with Valencia for Mustafi. He will fly to London for a medical and to seal terms on a 5 year contract. Perez medical also today.”

“I’m 99 per cent confident that we will make a signing,” said Wenger. “I’m more optimistic than before but I can’t announce anything yet.

Honestly, I expected it to be easier than ever (to conclude transfer deals) but it looks like it will be harder than ever. It will be frenetic in the next three days.”

On the frustration of fan’s about transfer dealings in this window, Wenger added.

“I’m happy when our supporters are happy but my focus is on strengthening the squad in the right way.

I focus first on making sure I make the right decisions.”

Joel Campbell has already departed on a season long loan to Sporting Lisbon and Wenger was asked about the future of Calum Chambers this morning. Rob Holding was preferred to Chambers in the starting line-up at Leicester last week and the impending arrival of Mustafi suggest his first team chances will be further restricted.

Wenger though insisted that Chambers won’t be sold but may go out on loan.

“No (he won’t be sold). The fact that he could go out somewhere (on loan) and play? Yes”, said Wenger.

On whether Campbell has a future at Arsenal, Wenger added.

“I believe that he has been a victim of the size of the squad. He’s at an age where he needs to play, don’t rule out he comes back.”
