Arsene Wenger gets some respite as Arsenal ease to win over Everton
Arsene Wenger has endured a difficult week. Champions League and FA Cup exits this week have put the spotlight on the Arsenal manager.
With a faltering Premier League title challenge another defeat today would have increased the pressure on the manager.
The Arsenal players have given their manager some respite with an assured performance in beating Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park.
First-half goals from Danny Welbeck (7th minute) and Man-of-the-match Alex Iwobi (42nd minute) secured the three points for the Gunners.
Speaking after the match, Wenger said.
“It was a very significant win for us and a mental test,” he said.
We continued the level of performance (we produced) against Barcelona.
I like this group, I like the mental attitude, it has been questioned and it hurts me.
When you work every day with them you see how much effort they put in.”
On whether Arsenal are still in the title race, Wenger added.
“We are still in it in our minds and mathematically, yes, and we want everyone to be behind the team to give us a chance.
We are ready for a battle.
Why should it be a two-horse race with one team three points in front of us?
Let’s focus on performances and after that we will see how we finish.”
