Patience the key against over aggressive Newcastle

Arsene Wenger was pleased with Arsenal’s discipline as they overcame 10 man Newcastle United 1-0 in the Premier League yesterday lunchtime.

Newcastle had Aleksander Mitrovic sent off in the 16th minute when his over the ball challenge resulted in his boot raking down the shin of Francis Coquelin.

Referee Andre Marriner issued a straight red card to Mitrovic and booked six other Newcastle players.

“I must say that Newcastle decided from the start to make the game quite physical,” said Arsene Wenger

“We had to keep our nerve and not become aggressive as well,” added Wenger, who reviewed the Mitrovic incident on a TV monitor and had no doubts that Marriner made the right decision.

“I have just seen it on television and it was a red card. He didn’t play the ball at all.”

On only scoring one goal against the 10 men, Wenger was happy to take the three points and to stress the importance of remaining focused and patient.

“Patience was important today, Newcastle defended well. ”We are happy with the three points.”
