Arsenal transfer rumours.

Arsenal to go South American in their pursuit of defensive signing?

Arsenal are today linked with two South American defenders as their search for defensive reinforcements intensifies.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Villarreal’s Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista and Valencia’s Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi are both on the Gunners target list.

Paulista claims that his agent is in talks with Arsenal over a move to the Emirates.

“If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it’s not finalised then I am relaxed. I am focused on my work here, Paulista has said”

A potential stumbling block could be obtaining a work permit for Paulista.

The 24-year-old has yet to be capped by Brazil and does not have an EU passport.

The Daily Mirror say Arsenal are willing to offer around £5m plus extras for Paulista, with Villarreal asking for Joel Campbell on loan for the remainder of the season as part of any deal.

Sky sources say though that Villarreal will only sell in January if a club meets the €20m euro buyout clause in Paulista’s contract.

Other sources, however, claim that no deal is imminent between Arsenal and Villarreal.

Arsenal are also reported to be watching Valencia’s Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi. who can play right-back and centre-half.

Otamendi has also been watched by Manchester United and Valencia would want a big fee to release him.

Arsenal continue to be linked with Winston Reid too.

West Ham are believed to want around £7m for him in this transfer window, as he will be available for free in the summer.
