Theo and Ox enjoy their return to Southampton in Arsenal romp

Arsenal beat Southampton 5-0 in the FA Cup 4th round at St Mary’s stadium tonight.

The victory takes the Gunners into Monday’s draw for the last 16 of the competition.

Southampton make ten changes from the team that beat Liverpool to secure an EFL Cup final place on Wednesday night at Anfield.

The Saints were attempting to become the first team since Manchester United in 1982/83 to knock the Gunners out of both domestic cup competitions in the same season.

It looked to be a tall order for a Southampton side containing six teenagers.

Arsene Wenger, serving the first match of his four match touchline ban, made ten changes to the team that beat Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.

It was two Arsenal strikers returning after injury who will take the headlines. Former Saint Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick and Danny Welbeck netted a double.

Another returning Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also had an excellent night against his old club.

Danny Welbeck on his first start since May 2016 opened the scoring in the 15th minute.

The England International was played in by an inch perfect pass by Lucas Perez. Welbeck chipped the ball with his right foot over keeper Harry Lewis and into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Welbeck doubled the lead seven minutes later. He raced on to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s floated through ball, and slotted it past Lewis into the net.

Arsenal put the result beyond doubt in the 35th minute. This time Welbeck was the provider. Lucas Perez played another perfectly weighted pass to Welbeck and he ran to the by-line before cutting the ball back for Walcott to prod the ball into the net.

Walcott got his second goal in the 69th minute. After a mazy run Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked out substitute Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean cut the ball back for Walcott, who converted from the six-yard line.

Sanchez was also the provider as Walcott completed his hat-trick in the 85th minute.

So Arsenal safely progress into the FA Cup last 16 and Monday’s draw.

Next up they face Watford in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Arsenal: Ospina 6, Bellerin 7, Mustafi 7, Holding 7, Gibbs 7, Oxlade-Chamberlain 9, Maitland-Niles 7, Walcott 8, Reine-Adelaide 7 (Iwobi), Perez 7, Welbeck 8 (Sanchez).
