Beth Mead joins Arsenal Ladies from the Black Cats

Arsenal Ladies have completed the signing of Beth Mead from Sunderland.

The 21-year-old England Under-23 striker has signed ahead of the 2017 Women’s Super League (WSL) 1 Spring Series, which begins in April.

Arsenal Ladies get their campaign under way at home to Notts County Ladies on Sunday, 23 April.

Mead scored 77 goals in 78 appearances for Sunderland Ladies. She was Sunderland’s top league scorer in 2016, netting five top-flight goals.

Speaking to Arsenal Player Beth said: “I am so excited to have signed for Arsenal Ladies and I can’t wait to get started. I want to win trophies with this team, and I want to learn and grow further from the top players that I will be playing with here. It’s an honour to be a part of this special club.”

Mead was the Professional Football Association’s (PFA) Young Player of the Year award in 2016, after being voted as the WSL 1 Players’ Player of the Year in 2015.

Mead earned her first England senior squad call up in 2015, but is yet to win her first cap.

The Whitby-born forward, who had a contract with Sunderland until 2019, has netted 10 times in 25 appearances for England at various youth levels.

Mead joins US International Heather O’Reilly as another new signing as Arsenal Ladies manager Pedro Losa shapes his team for the new season following the retirement of Kelly Smith.
