Martina super strike helps put the skids under Arsenal

Arsenal missed the chance to go to the top of the Premier League as they were beaten 4-0 by Southampton at St Mary’s tonight.

The Gunners went from the high of beating Manchester City on Monday, to the low of an abject defensive performance against the Saints tonight.

Cuco Martina marked his first league start for Southampton with a spectacular strike, curling the ball past Petr Cech from 30 yards out in the 19th minute.

Any chance of a second half comeback from the Gunners was dented in the 55th minute when Shane Long doubled Southampton’s lead

Jose Fonte’s header at the near post from a corner in the 68th minute put the Saints 3-0 up, and all but sealed Arsenal’s fate.

Shane Long completed the rout two minutes into injury time, running onto a Juanmi pass to squeeze the ball between Petr Cech’s legs for a fourth goal.

It could have been even worse for Arsenal. Virgil van Dijk had a header ruled out for offside, while Dusan Tadic’s dipping strike was pushed away by Cech.

The Gunners remain two points behind leaders Leicester City, who lost 1-0 against Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.

Manchester City moved to within a point of Arsenal, with their 4-1 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad.
