Arsenal beaten as Jese strike gives Stoke City all three points
Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City in the Premier League at the bet365 Stadium this afternoon.
Jese marked his debut for the Potters by scoring the only goal of the match in the 47th minute having signed on loan from Paris St-Germain earlier this week.
Granit Xhaka was made to pay for a misplaced place.
Saido Berahino took full advantage on the right hand side of the Arsenal box playing in Jese.
The Spaniard did the rest shooting the ball past Petr Cech into the far corner of the net.
After losing 1-0 to Everton last weekend, Stoke City will be delighted with the win.
The Potters were winless in their first seven-league games last season, and their first six in 2015-16.
They also failed to beat any of the top-six sides last season, earning just three points out of a possible 36.
For Arsenal they huffed and puffed but were unable to get on the scoresheet.
Alexandre Lacazette thought he had equalised in the 72nd minute when his shot found the top corner of the net from just inside the penalty area, but he was adjudged to have been offside.
The defeat for Arsenal means they have not won their opening two matches of a Premier League season since 2009/10.
The loss for Gunners also ended a streak of six consecutive Premier League wins.
It was also their first opening away Premier League fixture defeat in nine seasons (W3, D5).
It will no doubt open up the debate on the extension of Arsene Wenger’s contract for a further two years, the ongoing situation of key players such as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil now being in the last year of their contracts and Arsenal’s lack of an overall transfer policy this summer.
Today showed that the familiar shortcomings and frailties remain from recent seasons.
This is what Arsene Wenger had to say after the match on BT Sport: “I believe some teams will get something here, that is why if you want to play at the top you have to consider it three points dropped.
“It was a very frustrating evening. I feel we had plenty of chances to score and didn’t. We know in this kind of game it’s important not to make a mistake but straight after half-time we were too sluggish on defending and we paid for it.
“After that we did not move the ball quickly enough and we did not combine well. On top of tha I think we scored a goal that is not offside. It’s a very easy decision. When the ball is kicked he is not offside, Lacazette.
“I was not convinced by our central defence today.”
Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Monreal, Kolasanic (Giroud), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka (Iwobi), Ramsey, Welbeck, Ozil, Lacazette (Walcott).
