Alexis doubles up in Gunners win

Alexis took advantage of two defensive errors from Sunderland to score twice as Arsenal won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

The Gunners move up to fifth place in the Premier League with only their third win of the campaign.

After their 8-0 thrashing at Southampton last Saturday, the Sunderland defence were again in a charitable mood this afternoon.

Alexis scored his first goal on 30 minutes when Black Cats defender Wes Brown miskicked  attempting to play the ball back to his goalkeeper.

Alexis raced onto the ball and clipped it past former Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone into the net.

It was the Chilean’s seventh goal in 11 games for the Gunners.

Alexis made sure of the points in the second minute of injury time.

He had the simplest of tasks to put the ball into an empty net after Mannone miskicked an attempted clearance.

The goal was Arsenal’s 1500 hundredth in the Premier League.

Sunderland carried little attacking threat in the match, and if the Gunners had been more clinical in front of goal the margin of victory would have been greater.
