Alexandre Lacazette marks his Arsenal debut with a goal
Alexandre Lacazette marked his Arsenal debut with a goal against Sydney FC today.
Second half substitute Lacazette’s goal helped the Gunners to a 2-0 victory in their opening pre-season match in front of an 80,000 sell out crowd at the ANZ Stadium.
Arsenal opened the scoring through skipper Per Mertesacker in the 4th minute. The Sydney defence failed to clear the ball out from a Mesut Ozil corner, allowing Mertesacker to volley home from close range.
Danny Welbeck had a penalty saved in the 56th minute. The referee awarded Arsenal a penalty after adjudging Sydney defender Ryall handled the ball inside the box to stop a goal-bound effort. Replays though showed the ball hit his back. Justice was done though as keeper Redmayne dived to his right and save Welbeck’s weak penalty.
Lacazette sealed the win in the 83rd minute when he arrived unmarked inside the penalty box to sidefoot the ball into the net from an Alex Iwobi cut-back.
Youngsters Reiss Nelson, Cohen Bramall and Joe Willock all impressed as Arsene Wenger rang the changes in the second half to give as many players in the touring party as possible a run-out.
It will be Lacazette though who will make most of the headlines in scoring his first Arsenal goal after joining from Lyon to become the club’s record signing.
